  14. I finally got tired of the PClone Topaz font and did something about
  15. it.  I took the font editor, loaded Topaz 8, got rid of all those
  16. silly serifs (some of those letters look downright strange blown up),
  17. smoothed out the edges and rounded the characters.  I call the result
  18. Pearl.  Those of you who have seen the IBM RT with the APA-16 display
  19. know a little bit what it looks like.  It only comes in an 8-point
  20. version, same size as Topaz 8 (so you can use it in place of Topaz and
  21. still get an 80-column display).  I didn't modify any of the
  22. international characters, mostly because I didn't care about them
  23. (those of you who do, they are easy enough to change).

  25. To install the font:

  27. unshar and uudecode the files.

  29. create a subdirectory in FONTS: called pearl.  place the file 8 in
  30. this directory.  Place the file pearl.fonts in FONTS:  You're done.
  31. The font is new ready for use with SetFont.

  33. I use it with MicroGnuEmacs all the time and enjoy the change in
  34. display.  Too bad vt100 doesn't accept alternate fonts.  Dave, do you
  35. think the next version could allow the user to select the font via an
  36. init file option?

  38. Incidentally, I was thinking about making a set of "standard" fonts,
  39. the ones you see used in normal print and not Dpaint pictures --
  40. things like Times Roman, Helvetica, Courier, Souvenir, and Bodoni.  I
  41. think they would be pretty useful with a program like PageSetter.  Do
  42. these fonts already exist, either commercially or as freely
  43. redistributable software?
